FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Navajo Nation and Ute Mountain Ute Planning Team, in conjunction with the Four Corners Heritage Council, invite the public to attend the Four Corners Monument Plaza Dedication on September 17, 2010, at 9 a.m. The program will include Native American performances, a welcome by planning team co-chairs, and recognition of tribal, federal, and state representatives who have been instrumental in the design and creation of the new Monument Plaza. A presentation will also be given by Randy Bloom of the National Society of Professional Surveyors regarding the accuracy of the monument’s location.
As part of the ceremonies, Jim Dion of National Geographic will announce the launch of The Four Corners Region Geotourism MapGuide Project. The project seeks to contribute to the economic health of communities by promoting geotourism: tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place — its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the well-being of its residents. The Four Corners Region designated for the MapGuide encompasses a major portion of the Colorado Plateau, including communities, private and public lands in the four-state area. The printed MapGuide will be available in fall of 2011. A parallel interactive Web site, www.FourCornersGeotourism.com, is also being developed. Public forums and presentations will be conducted in communities throughout the region to encourage nominations and community involvement.
As part of the Plaza dedication, lunch will also be provided by Wild Flower Catering. For information on the dedication ceremony, please contact Susan Thomas, Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway – Colorado, at 970-739-3158.
