Delta County, Colorado, Invites Visitors “Into The Wild”

– Exploration on “Our Side of the Divide” includes the unspoiled beauty of canyons, rivers and mountains on a vast spread of public lands –

The Delta County Tourism Cabinet offers vacationers the allure of nature in the raw. Visitors to the area can travel in any direction and find public lands presenting every outdoor recreation activity imaginable. Six historic communities provide a base camp for adventure. With so many diversions, Delta County is every city-dweller’s dream “just-need-to-get-away” destination.

  • Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area (NCA) – 600 million years of geological formation preserve the magnificence of carved sandstone canyons and crashing waterfalls in the Dominguez-Escalante NCA. Explorers can cover terrain in a number of ways—on foot, horseback, mountain bike, ATV or motorcycle—and likely catch sight of the wildlife along the way. The rugged Escalante Canyon also has some of the best mountain climbing in Western Colorado that belayers won’t want to miss.
  • Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area – In the Gunnison Gorge, the recreation is as diverse as the landscape. Technical and remote boating of all kinds and Gold Medal trout fishing top the list of ways to let loose. For those looking for excitement beyond the water, hiking, horseback riding, camping and hunting lay within a stone’s throw. There is no excuse for a dull moment at this NCA!
  • West Elk Wilderness – For an even more remote experience, this U.S. Wilderness Area offers untamed areas of exploration. Trekkers can follow 200 miles of trails or discover rarely observed wildlife such as deer, elk and beaver in a habitat of seldom-seen valleys and volcanic rock formations. Wherever travelers roam, the wild delights of nature will have them wishing for more storage space on their cameras.

Wondering where to go wild at night? The towns of Cedaredge, Crawford, Delta, Hotchkiss, Orchard City and Paonia aren’t just a place to lay one’s head. Local wineries provide a taste of the region’s finest vintages. Travelers who plan ahead can take in a town rodeo or festival. Carousers can even catch dinner and a show at the Paradise Theatre or the Blue Sage Center for the Arts in the town Paonia and enjoy a microbrew at Revolution Brewery afterwards.
